Ronald Reagan, (by far the second worst* President of the United States; (he’s the one who brought us things like busting of Unions on the Federal level, taxing of Unemployment Benefits, closing of mental health facilities (and the creation of the homeless class); the list goes on) once said in an interview: “I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism.”Ask any of the wack-job teabaggers, birthers, and deathers (the very small MINORITY of which aren’t payed shills for the insurance industry) what their political affiliation is and most will say Libertarian. For that matter most Republican office holders will tell you that they at least lean toward Libertarianism. Most notable in this respect is the Republican Senator from Texas, Ron Paul who once ran for President as a Libertarian.
History will show that rather than try to get elected honestly, the Libertarian Party, beginning in the late ’70s, hijacked the Republican Party (along with the Christian Right, which also played a part, many of them being Libertarians too). This is probably because the LP has a reputation for being so far out (like another planet, as Barney Frank might say) that they are unelectable. But, all you have to do in America is take the same ideals and relabel them “Republican” and well you’re suddenly credible.
Not surprising then, as Isaac Bonewits observed, many Satanists are also Libertarian.
“How can you be so anti-Libertarian?,” they say. “What’s wrong with being against high taxes, and for individual rights?” If that were really the case, I’d be right with you. But the “individual rights” you are all for are the rights of Corporations over workers; the rights of the rich over the poor. I’m all for individual rights: the right to healthcare, the right to housing. The right to a living wage. The right to fresh, pure food. The right to drink fresh, pure, clean water. The right to breathe clean air. The right to an education (up to a Doctoral Degree, if desired). The right to work.
“You might say that I’m a dreamer, But I’m not the only one.I hope some day you’ll join us. And the world will live as one.” — John Lennon IMAGINE.
